Christmas Baking

To me, one of the best things about the holiday season is the opportunity to get into the kitchen and bake.  I love the whole process of baking (well, maybe not the clean-up part) and am thrilled that Margaux is eager to join me in the kitchen.  If I'm making cookies or pie, you can be sure that Margaux is right there with me.  I love this because it is something I shared with my Mom and now I can see this family ritual being carried forward.  I always feel closest to my mom when I am in the kitchen "stirring," as she used to say.  There are so many times when I can actually hear my mom's voice telling me what to do or why a certain part of the baking process is done a particular way.  I'm so grateful that she created a wonderful recipe book and gave it to me when Mike and I got married.  The best part is that she made notes on almost every recipe on where it came from or why it is special in our family.  This holiday season, I am making some recipes from that book that I have never tried before, and I can't wait to see how they turn out.  In the meantime, I'm teaching Margaux the basics, like making chocolate chip cookies.  I hope that when she is my age, she'll hear the echos of my voice guiding her through the baking process.  Here are some pictures of our fun in the kitchen this past weekend.

Tis the season

Margaux and I made our first-ever gingerbread house this past weekend.

Tooth news

What you see below is a before (top) and after (bottom) shot from lunch one day last week.  Margaux had a very loose tooth, and it came out while we were eating lunch at McKinley's in Fort Worth.  She was very impressed that the tooth fairy found her in Texas.  Another tooth is loose, so there may be more news on this front before long.  In addition to the teeth, you might also notice that Margaux is pretty banged up in these pictures.  She took a spill at school.  The only funny thing about that is that whenever anyone asks her what happened, she just looks at them and says, "Face plant." Her face is already looking much better, though.  Kids heal so quickly!  I'm thankful for that because I was beginning to think our Christmas card picture was going to look like an ad for Child Protective Services.

Halloween pics

Margaux and I carved pumpkins Sunday afternoon.

She helped by scooping out the seeds, meat, and pulp.

She particularly liked "the slimy stuff."

Here are our finished products! The small pumpkin was one they gave her at school. She insisted that the big pumpkin be smiling and that the little one look spooky. She named the little one "Baby Face" and the big one "Earl." Make of these facts what you will.

This is her Halloween costume this year...a bat!

Somebody has been busy

When I put Margaux to bed last night, the bed was clear, she was under the covers and all her stuffed animals were up on a tall shelf.  When I went in to check on her before I went to bed, this is what I found.  It's hard to tell it from the picture, but she is sleeping in a very small corner of the bed.

A Bedtime Story

We switched things up last night, and Margaux told me a bedtime story instead of me telling her one.  Here's her story.  Nothing has been changed or added.  Spelling of some unusual words is just a guess.

Once upon a time in a far faraway land called New York there lived a giant animal named a snortysnufalus.  The snortysnufalus looks kind of like an elephant except that it is pink with red and orange polka dots and has orange eyes that it can see out of.  It lives in the water and has a blowhole.  It eats and drinks a liquid called fortaxim that gives it energy and that it can blow out its blowhole.  People hardly ever see the snortysnufalus, but it’s in the water about four miles from the Statue of Liberty.

Perhaps we've been watching a bit too much TV

The other day I overheard Margaux saying, "Toilet, commode, potty, throne, ..." and the list went on.  I said, "Margaux, who taught you all those different names?"  She said, "I don't know, but Clorox cleans them all!"

While we were in North Carolina with family, I told Margaux it was time to go to bed.  She got really upset and exclaimed, "I can't go now!  There's more late night fun coming right up!"

Nature girl strikes again

Margaux finds seaweed on Nantucket.  Yay slimy green stuff!
Margaux holds a moon snail at the Maria Mitchel Aquarium. Her favorite sea creature so far this summer.
Margaux holds a welk at the aquarium.  She loved it when it oozed slime on her.
Margaux pretends to be a moon snail at Children's Beach.  The parents of other children who were nearby thought the girl trying to bury herself head first in the sand was hysterical.
Back in Texas, Margaux loves the snail and snail trail she found one morning as we were leaving Dan and Tamara's house to head to zoo school!  Who says you have to travel across the country to marvel at animal life?

Uhhh, there's another word for that

When Margaux was 3, she took a vocabulary test as part of an experiment at OSU. Here's a short, funny clip.

More Wisdom from a 4-Year Old

On Wednesday, Margaux got into a disagreement with a friend who came over to play.  All reports indicated that Margaux was clearly the one at fault.  Later that evening I sat Margaux down to ask her why she acted the way she did.  Her response?  "I made a mistake, Mom.  I have to make those to improve."  Hmmm.  Sounds a little like Eddie Haskell to me, but ok.

The next day at school, Margaux's teacher told me another story.  Margaux and the other kids had been on the playground blowing dandelions and making wishes.  When her teacher asked what she had wished for, Margaux said, "I don't make wishes.  I have everything I need."  I'm going to confess to needing a dose of that philosophy.

Two funny things Margaux said this morning

On the way to school today, I pointed out a neighbor's yard which was full of roses in bloom.  Margaux said, "Now, I know what they mean when they say something can brighten your day."

Later in the drive, we were listening to this 70's radio station and the Carol King song "Sweet Seasons" came on, which has a very nice beat to it.  I looked in the rearview mirror and Margaux was bopping her head up and down in her carseat.  When she caught my eye, she said, "This is a really good groove."

The things that go on in that girl's head...make me smile.

Nature Girl

As further evidence of just how much Margaux loves nature, here she is holding a handful of night crawlers. One of them was about 10 inches long. I had the heebiejeebies, but she and Mike were loving it.

Birthday Pics

Stillwater has this wonderful new children's museum called the Wondertorium. We had Margaux's birthday party there. She loved it.

Happy 4th Birthday!

Dear Margaux,

It’s so hard to believe that you are four today. I wanted to write you this letter so that you’ll know a little bit about what you were like when you were four. Your favorite colors are pink and purple. Your favorite book is called, “Where’s my Mom?” Your favorite TV show is Curious George, and your favorite movie is a tie between Finding Nemo and the Jungle Book. Your best friend is Claire. Your favorite teacher is Miss Jessica. You love to travel and are always up for a road trip or a trip to the airport. You love going to new places, but you also have some favorite spots. You talk about Nantucket like other kids talk about Disney World. Whenever we get back to Stillwater after a visit to see your family in Texas or Louisiana, you cry and say, “I miss my people.” Your favorite food is blueberries. We can barely ever get you to eat meat, but you love almost all fruits and vegetables. You eat a lot stuff Mommy doesn’t eat like blue cheese, cucumbers, and radishes.

You rarely sleep through the night. Your Mommy and Daddy are praying for this to change because we are very tired. You say you need a bigger bed. We are working on that. You make us very nervous at church because the minister often hands you the microphone during children’s church and you never know what is going to come out of your mouth. You once said, “Jonah got spit out of a fish and took a rocket ship to Ninevah and did what God told him to do.” You love shapes. You were recently talking about the angles of a trapezoid and when Mommy asked if they had four right angles, you laughed and said, “mostly they have two acute and two obtuse angles.” Though you seriously thought I was teasing you about the right angles, I had to look up acute and obtuse to remind myself of what they were.

On your 4th birthday, you caught your first fish in a pond on the 16th fairway of Stillwater Country Club. You dug up the worm that you used to catch it. You started the day by playing with your new dollhouse. From dollhouse to fishing all in one day, that’s what I call well rounded. You are one with nature. So much so that we cannot go anywhere after school without first changing your clothes because you are covered in dirt from head to toe. Even the other children are taken aback by your love of dirt. You make these weird piles of things around the house. They can contain pillows, toys, things that belong to Mommy and Daddy, books, bits of string, or anything else you can get your hands on. You call them your “work.” We don’t know why you do this, but you’ve been doing this since you first learned to walk, so it’s something that is part of you. You love to build things. Construction toys (blocks, geomags, legos, etc.) are your all time favorite toys, and you say you are going to be an engineer when you grow up. It will be interesting to see what you really turn out to be, but I won’t be surprised if it is something with math and science.

You are still a cuddle bug. You love hugs and kisses. You still say, “I want to be holded,” even though you know the correct word to use. You love to help Mommy cook in the kitchen. Cookies and apple pie are your favorite things to make. You know what you want. That’s a nice way of saying you can be a bit bossy. Your teacher says you are not that way at school, though, so you apparently know your audience. You start every day telling Mommy and Daddy that you love us. We’re soaking that up for years to come when those words won’t flow so freely. We’ve loved every day of the first four years with you. You are pure joy. I’ll need to reread that last sentence when you want company at 3 a.m., but in the light of day and after coffee that is truly how I feel.

What goes on in the night...

I went in to check on Margaux last night before going to bed and found this:

Nothing too unusual about that, is there? Except that when we put her to bed, we put her *in* her bed. When I came back to check on her, she was no longer there.

Instead, at some point between 8pm and midnight, she got up, out of bed, and spent considerable time pulling all of the blankets off her bed. She neatly arranged them into a pallet on the floor, and then pulled a large bean bag chair over the bed to serve as a blanket.

She's been saying she wants a bigger bed. Maybe she really means it.

You dig?

The unseasonably warm weather (which ends today, I'm afraid) has allowed M3 plenty of time outside. One of her favorite things to do is dig for earthworms.

She found several this day....

...and got nice and dirty, which is always fun.

Cruising

The day after Christmas, my Dad and Lauren took us on a week long Caribbean cruise. We went to Cozumel, Grand Cayman, and Jamaica. I thoroughly recommend this form of vacation, especially for those with young children. The cruise ship had a children's program that Margaux could go to anytime, and she often preferred to do that over hanging out with us. That meant Mike and I got to read entire books, eat adult dinners, and even occasionally lounge around with no plan at all. A good time was had by all. Here are a few pictures. Two of them are from the sea turtle farm on Cayman. The big turtle weighs a few hundred pounds, but he started out as little as the one that Margaux is holding. One other picture shows what Margaux looked like when we picked her up from the kids' club on Pirate night.
